#Q1015 - Using WinZip to Compress the WorkingArtist 3.0 Data File (artdat30.mdb).

You can use WinZip to compress the WorkingArtist 3.0 data file. Once compressed, the zipped data file can be stored on a computer, copied onto a CD, stored on an external hard drive or emailed as an attachment.

Please note, WinZip is a very useful and powerful utility with many options. These instructions are meant to help with a basic function. If you have other questions or need technical assistance with WinZip, you should contact WinZip directly.

These instructions were written using WinZip 9.0. You may encounter different responses if you are using a different version.

For the purposes of this article, we shall assume that the WorkingArtist 3.0 data file is located at c:\program files\WorkingArtist30. To locate your WorkingArtist data file, here is a link to a WorkingArtist Knowledge Base article on Locating the WorkingArtist 3.0 data file (artdat30.mdb) on your Hard Drive.

Opening Winzip in "Classic" Mode.

1. With the WorkingArtist application closed, open WinZip by double-clicking on the Winzip icon.
2. From the Toolbar, click on New to display the New Archive screen.
3. In the Save In box, select the folder you wish to save to.
4. In the File Name box, enter a name for your zip file. We suggest something like WA060102 (which would stand for WorkingArtist 2006 January 2).
5. Press OK to display the Add screen.
6. In the Look In box, locate the WorkingArtist data file (artdat30.mdb) as follows:
a. Double-click on c\: and scroll down to Program Files.
b. Double-click on Program Files and scroll down to WorkingArtist30.
c. Double-click on WorkingArtist30 to display all the WorkingArtist folders and files.
d. Click on artdat30.mdb once to put artdat30.mdb into the File Name box.
7. Click on Add to zip artdat30.mdb into a zip file with the name you gave in #4 above, i.e., WA060102.zip.

Opening Winzip and Using it in "Wizard" Mode.

1. With the WorkingArtist application closed, open WinZip by double-clicking on the Winzip icon.
2. Click on Next to display the WinZip Wizard Activity screen.
3. Select "Create a new Zip file."
4. Click on Next to display the WinZip Wizard Choose Zip Name screen.
5. In the File Name box, enter a name for your zip file. We suggest something like WA060102 (which would stand for WorkingArtist 2006 January 2.)
6. Click on Browse, if you want to change the location of where the file will be saved.
7. Enter a name for the zip file then press Next to display the WinZip Wizard Select Files screen.
8. Click on Add Files;
9. In the Look In box, locate the WorkingArtist data file (artdat30.mdb) as follows:
a. Double-click on c\: and scroll down to Program Files.
b. Double-click on Program Files and scroll down to WorkingArtist30.
c. Double-click on WorkingArtist30 to display all the WorkingArtist folders and files.
d. Click on artdat30.mdb once to put artdat30.mdb into the File Name box.
10. Click on Add to zip artdat30.mdb into a zip file with the name you gave in #5 above, i.e., WA060102.zip.

Right-clicking on the Artdat30.mdb File and Selecting WinZip.

1. With the WorkingArtist application closed, right click on the MyComputer icon.
2. From the drop-down menu, click on Explore;
3. Locate your WorkingArtist30 directory. This is probably c:\program files\WorkingArtist30.
a. On the left hand side of your screen, double-click on "c:", then scroll down to "Program Files."
b. Staying on the left hand side of the screen, double-click on "Program Files" and scroll down to "WorkingArtist30."
c. Double-click "WorkingArtist30". On the right side of your screen you should now see all the files in the WorkingArtist30 directory.
4. Locate artdat30.mdb. If you see "artdat30" but not "artdat30.mdb", then there is an option on your machine that is hiding the file extensions. Here is an article on how to display file extensions.
5. Right-click on artdat30.mdb and a menu will display.
6. Place your cursor on the WinZip icon and a second menu will open with several options:
-- "Add to Zip file" creates a zip file with the option of changing the name of the zip file and its location.
-- "Add to Artdat30.mdb" automatically creates a zip file in the same location as the file being zipped.
-- "Add to recently used Zip file" adds the file to a recently created zip file.
-- "Zip and Email Artdat30.mdb" creates a zip file and attaches it to an email in a configured email server.
-- "Zip and Email Plus" creates a zip file and attach it to an email in a configured email server. There are options for encryption.
7. Select the option you want to use to zip the file.

Using the "Add to Zip file" option.
1. WinZip automatically enters the location and name of the selected file with a .zip extension in the Add to Archive Box. In this case: C:\Program Files\WorkingArtist30\Artdat30.zip.
2. You can keep the "artdat30" name or edit it in the Add to Archive Box to something more identifiable, such as WA060102 (which would stand for WorkingArtist 2006 January 2).
3. You can keep the "C:\Program Files\WorkingArtist30" location or change it in the Add to Archive Box.
4. You can also change the name and location by clicking on the New button and browsing through the New Archive screen.
5. Click on the Add button to zip artdat30.mdb into a zip file with the name you gave in "2" above, i.e., WA060102.zip.
